Chapter Thirteen

The explosion roared above their heads, fire racing out of the cooling units to the sound of shattering glass. The entire room shook like an earthquake—undoubtedly, the entire base was shaking too.

Anthony wrapped himself around Elliot as best as he could, which wasn’t easy, as he was still strapped to the chair. Not to mention they were directly next to the glass doors of the cooling units, protected only by the thick concrete wall that had held the control panel.

Anthony hoped the wall would hold. After all, he was the one protecting Elliot, and had fairly good luck with protective barriers holding up against impossible odds in order to keep him safe. If it’d been Elliot shielding Anthony—well. Anthony didn’t much care for those odds.

Equally of concern were the hangar and the planes. Surely they’d be all right, as long as the fire remained contained. The flight would be delayed, of course, but perhaps if everyone was distracted with recovery operations, they’d be able to steal a plane. Anthony went over the altered escape plan while he waited for the fireball above their heads to slow down. It was a productive use of the time.

Gradually, the world went quiet again—or at least, quieter. All Anthony heard was the wind overhead, the fire crackling, the soft pops of glass exploding somewhere in the distance. The guards who’d caught the worst of the blast moaned. Anthony looked up and saw the sky above them, bright blue.

“Huh,” he said. “Guess the roof blew.”

“Oh great, I’m dead,” said Elliot from the floor. “Dammit.”

Anthony glanced down at him. “You’re not dead.”

“I’m dead and I’m tied to a chair!”

Anthony glanced around the room. It looked like a toddler’s art room after a month-long quarantine. Bright colored goop covered every available surface, blue and pink and green and glittery. Most of the guards lay piled on the far side of the room, groaning and also covered in various colors of goop.

Cicero was nowhere to be seen. No doubt halfway to Bulgaria by then, or at least on his way. Slipped through Anthony’s fingers just like he had every other time before.

Oh, Anthony, we both know you’re not going to kill me.

Anthony winced. The worst part was that Anthony could have done it, right there, quick as a wink and the entire mess would have been done. No wonder Cicero had no sense of self-preservation, if he was so convinced that his life was safe in Anthony’s hands.

Which it was. Since Anthony had spent at least ten minutes not killing the bastard.

Habit, of course, if Anthony wanted to reassure himself with something. Elliot wasn’t wrong; the DVM didn’t kill, so of course Anthony wasn’t exactly in the practice of killing his adversaries, even after a protracted bantering exchange. Anthony quite enjoyed the bantering, and he was fairly sure Cicero did as well; no point in skipping it.

Get him next time, thought Anthony. After all, there was still a rocket to stop in Bulgaria. Plenty of opportunities left.
